Dishwasher Repair

You run a full cycle, the dishwasher sounds like it’s working, but when you open the door, you’re met with greasy, gritty dishes. It’s one of the most common appliance complaints, and it’s incredibly frustrating.

As the recognized Factory Certified Service for Whirlpool Corporation in New York and New Jersey, our team at Dan Marc Appliance has seen—and fixed—this exact problem thousands of times. With over 75 certified technicians, we are the premier service provider that Whirlpool trusts.

Before you schedule a service call, here are the most common reasons your Whirlpool dishwasher isn’t cleaning, starting with the simplest DIY fixes.

1. Check the Simple Things First (The 2-Minute Fixes)

These user errors are more common than you’d think, and a simple adjustment can solve the problem.

  • Improper Loading: This is the #1 culprit. If large pans, cutting boards, or trays are placed on the bottom rack, they can block the spray arm, preventing it from spinning and spraying the top rack. Likewise, make sure no dishes are blocking the soap dispenser door from opening.
  • Run Your Hot Water First: Your dishwasher needs hot water (at least 120°F) to activate the detergent and melt grease. If your kitchen sink is far from your water heater, the dishwasher will fill with cold water for the first 5-10 minutes.
    • The Fix: Before you start the dishwasher, run the hot water at your kitchen sink until it’s steamy. This ensures your dishwasher gets a hot-water fill right from the start.

2. The Most Common DIY Repair: A Clogged System

If your dishes are covered in food particles, it’s almost certain that your dishwasher is trying to clean with dirty water. This happens when the filter or spray arms are clogged.

How to Clean Your Whirlpool Dishwasher Filter

Your dishwasher doesn’t have a “food grinder” like old models did. It has a filter that you must clean manually. If this is clogged, dirty water is just being recirculated onto your “clean” dishes.

  1. Locate & Remove: Remove the bottom rack. Look for the cylindrical filter assembly at the bottom of the tub.
  2. Twist to Unlock: Grasp the upper filter and turn it a quarter-turn counter-clockwise. Lift it straight out.
  3. Separate & Clean: You will now see the flat lower filter. Just lift this out. Rinse both filters thoroughly under your sink faucet until all debris is gone. A soft brush can be used, but never a wire brush.
  4. Re-install: Place the lower filter back first, ensuring it sits flat. Place the upper filter back in and turn it clockwise until it locks firmly into place. Do not run the dishwasher without the filter locked in.

How to Clean Your Whirlpool Spray Arms

The spray arms are what shoot the water. If the tiny holes are clogged, you get a weak, uneven wash.

  1. Remove the Arms: The lower spray arm usually just pulls straight up. The upper spray arm (under the top rack) is often held in place by a plastic locking knob that you turn to release.
  2. Inspect and Clean: Take the arms to the sink. Use a toothpick, a small piece of wire, or a paperclip to poke out any food debris or mineral deposits (from hard water) stuck in the spray holes.
  3. Rinse and Re-install: Run water through the arms to flush them out. Re-install them and give them a spin by hand to make sure they move freely and aren’t hitting any dishes.

3. When It’s Time to Call a Factory-Certified Pro

If you’ve cleaned the filters, cleared the spray arms, and are loading the unit correctly, but the dishes still aren’t clean, you likely have a component failure. This is where your DIY fix stops, and professional service begins.

  • A Broken Soap Dispenser: The dispenser is a timed mechanism. If the spring is broken or the wax motor has failed, it may not be opening at all, or it’s opening at the wrong time (e.g., during the final rinse).
  • A Faulty Water Inlet Valve: Your dishwasher may sound like it’s working, but it’s not filling with enough water. This leads to a weak, sloshy wash that can’t clean anything.
  • A Failing Circulation Pump: This is the “heart” of the dishwasher. If this motor is failing, it can’t send water to the spray arms with enough pressure to spin them or clean the dishes.

As the Premier Service Provider for Whirlpool, Dan Marc Appliance technicians are factory-trained to diagnose these specific components. We carry the genuine parts needed to complete the repair, often in a single visit.

Don’t guess what’s wrong or settle for gritty dishes. Trust the experts that Whirlpool trusts.
